Lead. Influence. Deliver Safe Underground Mining Excellence.

This is an opportunity for a proven underground mining professional to step into a highly influential leadership position, working closely with the Underground Manager and Technical Services team to support the safe, efficient and successful delivery of the mine plan.

As the Alternate Underground Manager, you will sit at the intersection of technical planning and operational execution — providing leadership across safety, mine planning, infrastructure, risk management, contractor performance and continuous improvement.

This is not just a technical role. We’re looking for a strong leader who can see the bigger picture, identify risks before they become issues and work collaboratively across the operation to deliver results.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Underground Manager, you will support the management and coordination of all underground mining activities.

You will provide technical and operational leadership to ensure the safe development and execution of the mine plan, with a strong focus on the 2–6 month planning horizon, critical infrastructure, operational risk and business continuity.

Working closely with operational leaders, Technical Services, contractors and key stakeholders, you will play an integral role in identifying risks, developing practical solutions and ensuring mining activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with plan.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Underground Manager with the safe and effective delivery of underground mining operations
  • Providing leadership across mine planning, production, scheduling and technical execution
  • Reviewing the mine plan and identifying emerging risks, constraints and opportunities
  • Driving risk mitigation strategies across the short to medium-term planning horizon
  • Leading and promoting a strong safety culture through visible leadership and effective risk management
  • Conducting underground inspections, audits and assurance activities
  • Supporting the implementation of safety frameworks, including Principal Hazard Verifications, Task Observations and risk assessments
  • Overseeing mine infrastructure planning and supporting capital expenditure justification and cost management
  • Leading, mentoring and developing Senior Production and Project Engineers
  • Supporting the management and coordination of mining contractors and subcontractors
  • Conducting business continuity reviews across infrastructure, redundancy and critical spares
  • Identifying opportunities to improve safety, productivity, cost performance and operational efficiency
  • Driving continuous improvement through innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Building strong working relationships across operations, planning, geology, geotechnical and contractor teams

You will be an experienced underground mining professional with strong technical capability and proven leadership experience. You will be comfortable balancing strategic planning with operational demands and have the confidence to make sound decisions in a dynamic mining environment.

To be successful, you will have the following:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering
  • A WA First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency – Non-Coal
  • Previous experience holding a First Class statutory appointment as a Deputy or Alternate Underground Manager
  • Current Australian C Class Driver’s Licence
  • 6+ years’ experience in underground mechanised mining
  • 3+ years’ experience in a senior or supervisory role
  • Strong experience across underground production, mine design, planning, scheduling and ventilation
  • Experience managing mining infrastructure projects
  • Experience developing budgets and monitoring operational and project costs
  • Strong knowledge of WA mining legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Advanced capability using Deswik CAD and Scheduler
  • Experience with INX and PRONTO will be highly regarded
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop technical teams
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and problem-solving skills
  • A proactive approach to safety, risk management and continuous improvement

If you’re an experienced underground mining leader looking for an opportunity to take on a highly influential statutory role and make a genuine impact on the future direction of a growing gold operation, we would love to hear from you.

Yes. Silverstone specialises in recruiting experienced professionals. Most of our roles require relevant industry experience, licences, tickets and the ability to work safely in operational environments.

While entry level opportunities may occasionally become available, they are very limited. If you’re looking to start a career in FIFO or enter the industry without relevant experience, we recommend gaining industry qualifications, licences or transferable experience before applying for specialised roles.
